Recently we received an interesting question: What is the difference between web-based and client-based fleet tracking?
What does this even mean? It’s a question you should ask yourself when deciding on a fleet tracking system. The most basic difference between the two is what drives your fleet tracking system. Will it be driven off of your internal resources or over the internet in a cloud computing environment? Let’s compare the two:
Client-based:
- Requires software install on your computers
- Potential frequent manual updates to the software
- Can only be used on computers with appropriate software
- Data saved on internal computers and networks
Web-based:
- No required software install on your computers
- Updates done over the internet with no impact on your computers or network
- Can be used on any internet ready computer
- Data saved over the internet in a cloud
- Reporting can be accessed from anywhere
The Web-based application is much more flexible and easy to maintain. That is the type of product that Geomoto is – we built it this way for your benefit! There is no software to be installed on your computers and everything can be managed online from any computer anywhere.
They both have their pros and cons. It just depends on the individual needs of the client.
Thanks for the comment, Jay! Can you elaborate on some of the pros and cons that are top of mind?
